A Day Trip to the Great Wall at Shanhaiguan

Do you know what the Great Wall of China is? It's this huge,

ancient wall that winds across the mountains of northern China

for thousands of miles! It was built a really, really long time ago

to protect ancient Chinese cities and villages from invaders. My

class just learned all about it in our history lessons, and now I'm

super excited to go see it for myself!

My parents promised to take me to visit a part of the Great

Wall during our next school break. We're going to drive out to a

place called Shanhaiguan in Hebei Province. Shanhaiguan is right

where the Great Wall meets the ocean, so you can see both the

wall and the sea at the same time! How cool is that?

I've been studying maps and pictures to get ready for our

trip. Shanhaiguan looks like such an amazing place. The wall

there is built along steep, craggy mountain ridges that plunge

down into the waves. There are huge watch towers and

fortifications defending the pass that the wall goes through. It

must have been an extremely important military location back in

ancient times.

I can't wait to climb up onto the wall and walk along the

ramparts. I'm going to pretend to be a brave Chinese soldier,

standing guard and looking out for enemies approaching from

the sea. Maybe I'll even get to dress up in some old-fashioned

armor! That would be so much fun. We're also going to visit the

Shanhaiguan Great Wall Museum to learn more about how the

wall was constructed and its history over the centuries.

The best part is that we're going to spend the whole day

exploring Shanhaiguan. We'll leave our house really early so we

can get there right when it opens. My parents are packing a huge

picnic lunch for us to enjoy on the Great Wall itself! I requested

all my favorite dishes - dumplings, fried noodles, steamed buns.

We'll spend the whole afternoon hiking along the wall, taking in

the amazing views, and learning about Chinese history and

culture from the tour guides.

After we've had our fill of the wall for the day, we're going to

head into the town of Shanhaiguan before going home. I'm so

excited to walk along the beach and maybe even dip my toes in

the ocean! They have a lively street market there too, full of

vendors selling fresh seafood, clothes, toys, and all sorts of other
